NIHR Bristol CRF have a number of core staff, many of whom hold concurrent posts elsewhere in the Trust or at University of Bristol.

Professor David Wynick CRF Director

Professor of Molecular Medicine at University of Bristol, Consultant in Pain Medicine at UHBW David has been Joint Director of Research and Development at UHBW and North Bristol Trust (NBT) for twelve years. He is also Director of Bristol Health Partners AHSC. He has extensive experience in conducting early and late phase clinical trials and has held a number of high-profile research grants.

Dr Charlotte Bradbury CRF Deputy Director and Training Lead

Consultant Senior Lecturer in haematology at University of Bristol /UHBW. Charlotte leads early and later phase studies focusing on thrombocytopaenia and coagulopathies, including part of the REMAP-CAP trial during COVID-19. Charlotte is leading on the development of our NIHR Bristol CRF training offering across all groups of staff, from undergraduate medical students, experienced medics, NMAHPs and any staff involved in the delivery of experimental medicine and early phase clinical trials.

Dr Rajeka Lazarus CRF Deputy Director and Vaccine Research Lead

Rajeka Lazarus is a consultant in infectious diseases and microbiology. Rajeka has been a clinician for over 20 years and has over 15 years of clinical trial experience. Her areas of interest are complex clinical trial design, use of qualitative methods to enhance quantitative research and public engagement

Margie Pavey CRF Operations Manager

A nurse by background, Margie has been working in clinical research for fifteen years and is now responsible for the day to day running of the CRF and is dedicated to developing our early phase trial/ experimental medicine portfolio and capability. Her previous roles include academic Clinical Trial manager and Study Support service Manager for a local NIHR Clinical Research Network.

Catherine Pearce CRF Management Assistant

Catherine has been working for the NHS for five years. Having previously worked in several patient facing admin roles, the move across to the NIHR Bristol Clinical Research Facility at such a crucial time has proved an interesting and exciting change of pace. As Management Assistant, Catherine is responsible for supporting the management of the facility and has particular interest in the communications and IT elements of the role.

Kelly Turner CRF Research Sister

With 20 years’ service in the NHS, Kelly is an experienced team lead who has worked in a number of clinical areas including Oncology, Haematology, Infectious Disease and Immunology. She takes a particular interest in both participant experience and improving retention in clinical trials.

Bella Turner CRF Senior Trial Coordinator

Bella has worked in the NHS for five years, previously working in haematology and oncology clinical trials. She manages the non-clinical team members, and is currently undertaking a part-time Master’s in Leading Clinical Research Delivery.

Jess Bisset R&D Research Operations Manager and CRF Quality Lead

Jess has been working in clinical research for fifteen years and in her current role for 10 years. She takes responsibility for UHBW sponsored trials, monitoring, quality assurance and the non-commercial research portfolio. Jess oversees Quality Management for the CRF.

Jake Harley R&D Industry Manager and CRF Industry Lead

Jake has worked in Research Management within the NHS for nearly 18 years and has been the Commercial Research Manager at UHBW since 2011. He oversees all industry sponsored and funded research undertaken at UHBW. Jake is responsible for maintaining and increasing commercial research income in the Trust and building relationships with industry partners and bringing in new business.

Nic Manning R&D Matron and CRF Lead Nurse

Nic has worked in clinical research for twenty years, previously as lead research nurse in cardiology and now as UHBW’s research matron, supporting the 11 research delivery teams across the trust. Nic’s role as lead nurse for the CRF involves her supporting and overseeing the delivery of early phase/experimental research ensuring that the research teams have the necessary skills and training to deliver high quality care to our research participants.

Oli Griffiths R&D Clinical Research Education Facilitator

Oli has been a research nurse in a number of settings for nine years and took on this new role for the trust in summer 2022. He works with research staff across the trust but takes a particular interest in early phase research and the NIHR Bristol CRF. Oli is developing training for early phase trials delivery staff.

Eva Roberts Patient Involvement Facilitator

Eva is the Patient and Public Involvement Facilitator for the Clinical Research Facility and the Bristol Biomedical Research Centre (BRC). Eva supports patient and public involvement and engagement (PPIE) in research for both organisations. She also co-runs Bristol’s Gen R Young People’s Advisory group (YPAG). Eva is passionate about involving and engaging groups and communities often under-represented in research.

Kathy Kantor

Kathy is a retired Nurse and now feels ready to get involved in the various issues that interest her. Kathy is a current member of Bristol Older People’s Forum and is always keen to speak on issues pertinent to older people and their lives, especially those living on State Pension alone. Kathy always seeks to ensure that women’s rights and issues are protected and addressed. In joining the CRF she says ‘I will do my best to bring a lay person’s opinion and outlook to the important work of the Clinical Research Facility’.

Joanna Czaplewska

Joanna has a master’s degree in Business and Marketing, but a few years back, she decided she wanted to give something back to society. For over four years, she worked for the NHS as an Ambulance Coordinator. Now she is working for Bristol City Council in the housing department. Joanna has a lot of lived experience with people who face various disadvantages, this includes her disabled son and her father with dementia. This has enabled Joanna to be fully aware of the struggles within the NHS and social services. Most of all, she is aware of the daily struggle many disabled or disadvantaged people experience such as people being misled, confused, feeling powerless and/or unable to express their feelings or speak in the first instance. Joanna says: ‘I would like to be able to speak for those can’t and give others a glimpse of hope when there is none left. Hopefully, I will accomplish this by joining the Clinical Research Facility’.

Helen Saldanha BHOC Performance and Operations Manager

Helen is responsible for delivery of Advanced Therapy, Bone Marrow Transplant and Haematology trials in the Bristol Haematology and Oncology Centre. With a science background, pharmaceutical industry experience and over 20 years in Clinical Research, Helen leads on the successful management of complex studies in the field of cellular therapy e.g. CAR-T and Immune Effector Cell treatments alongside national haematology and Bone Marrow Transplant portfolio.

Karly Harris Senior Chemotherapy Research Nurse

Karly has been a nurse at BHOC for the last 7 years. For the last three years she has worked in the clinical trials unit and most recently has taken responsibility for the expansion and delivery of the early phase cancer portfolio for the CRF. She also manages the trials clinical area, delivering investigational drugs and treat patients who are also on both haematology and Radiotherapy clinical trials. As a systemic anti-cancer treatment (SACT) administrator Karly is often to be found treating patients but she is always keen to share her knowledge and experience, raising awareness across BHOC on study days, speaking about clinical trials and drug development.
